When I Googled “Pompeii Artwork” it brought up many websites titled “Erotic Art of Pompeii”. Somehow, I managed to find mostly non-erotic art. No matter what the subject I was very impressed with the artwork (if you saw some of the erotic images you’d know exactly what I mean). The detail and colors are magnificient. I think I was surprised mostly by the colors. I’m not sure if it’s the use of the colors or the fact that after nearly 2000 years the colors are still so vibrant. I still find it hard to believe that the artwork was preserved by being buried under ash and pumice.

The image in the bottom right is a painting that was on the outside of one of the buildings. It’s hard to tell but there is a piece of plastic (maybe plexiglass) covering the image so it doesn’t erode. The fact that you can get within inches of these paintings and see them in their environment is such a wonderful experience.

I had forgotten where I took the top image and as I was searching the internet for tomorrow’s image I came across the top image. It was hanging in one of Pompeii’s many thermopolia (shop or bar thought to have sold food). Click here to see a different view of the image.
