Pompeii Artifacts

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, many of the artifacts were still intact almost 2000 years after the destruction of Pompeii. The top image is actually a cast of the remains of one of the victims. When archaeologists excavating the site found remains of people they filled the place where the body was with plaster in order to get a perfect replication of the body’s position and facial expression.

When you first enter the site of Pompeii there is a building that houses many artifacts. In the bottom left photo you can see some clay jugs in the background. There were hundreds of items in this open building. I was surprised at how many were fully intact. I assumed they would be chipped/broken. While there definitely were broken items there were also many that looked as if they were in perfect condition.
