It was rather dangerous walking the streets in Pompeii. We actually saw one person fall in front of us. I’m sure many ankles are twisted each day. After walking around for hours in here it sure did take a toll on your feet, knees, back, etc.

The streets in Pompeii were extremely varied, some built with solid Roman engineering and underlain with water conduits; some dirt paths; some wide enough for two carts to pass; some alleys barely wide enough for pedestrian traffic. Notice the rock in the middle of the road in the bottom left hand image, this rock and many others were used to cross from one side of the street to the other. Human waste, horse manure and rain water would fill the streets so the best way to cross was to use the rocks.
