Yes, persistance pays off! On my last morning in Maine, we saw one of the loons in the pond (similar spot as yesterdays shots) and I figured I’d try one more time to walk over to the neighbor’s dock to try and get a closer shot. As I got out on the dock the loon was heading away from me so I started to whistle to see if I could get his attention. Not only did I get his attention but I peaked his interest as he came swimming right towards me.
He got so close that I had to back up to get my focus.

These are STUNNING. I did not realize how gorgeous their faces were! I never would’ve thought to whistle. Good tip 🙂

Thanks, Shirley. I also had no idea how beautiful they are. When I was editing the photo and it was blown up really big on the screen you could better see the purple and green shading on his head/face.
I was just trying to get his attention and whistling seemed like a good idea. I’m glad it actually worked 🙂

I’m going to show my dad these this weekend. He LOVES loons. We went on a vacation to the Adirondacks once specifically because the place was on a lake known for loons. We saw them from far far away and counted ourselves lucky.
